Market Buffet Restaurant Color Printing Story

Challenge: Quick turn-around on large-scale restaurant murals

Solution: ARC’s Color Services

  • Project completed on time

  • Satisfied restaurant client

  • Strengthened design firm partnership

Everyone at Mazzuca Design, Photography & Ideas (DPI)—from founder Frank Mazzuca and studio manager Stella Mazzuca to designers Sabrina Berlato and Rico Giovannini—takes their work seriously. But not themselves.

When clients would ask how to pronounce Mazzuca, the answer would be: “It rhymes with Bazooka, like the bubble gum.” Eventually, the creative Toronto, Canada design firm adopted Bazooka Joe as its mascot. And now all clients get free samples.

A recent recipient was the Market Buffet BBQ & Smokehouse, located an hour from Toronto in the city of Barrie. They were seeking to rebrand and reconfigure the eatery’s interior. Along with overhauling the signage, Mazzuca DPI set out to enliven the expansive wall space. Graphic treatment ideas ranged from cut log stumps near the grill area to vintage striped mock awnings above the bakery section.

And when Frank Mazzuca, who spent a lot of time in the restaurant seeking inspiration, saw the small, black-and-white historic photos of Barrie that dotted the walls, he knew exactly what he wanted to do—pump up the pictures and make murals out of them.

He also knew that creating more than 50 large-scale murals boasting 4’ x 4’ or 4’ x 16’ panels was no walk in the park. It required finesse, especially in the getting-the-colors-right department. And that required the right printing service.

Fun + Function

The printer Mazzuca turned to was ARC Document Solutions with whom he had worked on another restaurant project. Gibby G’s is an all-day breakfast place—also in Barrie—that features similar visuals on their walls.

“What made that job so successful was two things,” said Mazzuca. “One, our team and ARC’s Toronto team shared the same values in both the business and creative sense. And two, ARC does flat-out world-class work, from printing to installation.”

That symbiotic relationship continued during the Market Buffet BBQ & Smokehouse project, which was fun and creative yet tricky. One of the toughest aspects was getting the sepia tone look of the historic photographs just right. Part of the challenge stemmed from Mazzuca DPI having its own palate that ARC had to match.

“Our sepia tone features offbeat properties like cocoa and espresso, which are not easy to replicate,” explained Mazzuca. “But ARC nailed it—and not just once or twice but every time.”

Ability + Reliability

What ARC also had to nail was the timing. The restaurant had a grand opening that could not be missed. That meant there was one week to do a job that under the best of circumstances would take two or three weeks.

And that one week deadline wasn’t just for the printing but for the installation as well. To expedite the process, as each printed piece was completed, the ARC team would bring it into the restaurant and install it.

Happily, the deadline was met. And Mazzuca was not remotely surprised.

“A wealth of services and dedicated professionals who care about what they do as much as we do, that’s the beauty of ARC,” he enthused. “It’s a partnership in the truest sense.”
