Hyperlinking Puts Construction Company’s Team on the Same Page

Since 1947, Georgia-based Chris R. Sheridan & Co. (CRS) has been providing construction services for clients in a wide range of fields, including education, finance, healthcare, retail, and industrial. They’ve done everything from new constructions to renovations, primarily in the Peach State.

Their latest project is a new elementary school in Macon with a projected cost of $13 million. There’s nothing unusual about the job. Except for one thing — there’s a noticeable lack of paperwork.

Normally, the office would be overflowing with stacks of drawings and binders crammed with blueprints. What’s more, very few team members are walking around the jobsite carrying documents of any kind.

So, where has all the paper gone?

The majority has been replaced by digital copies of all the plans, contracts, specs, RFIs and ASIs, all of which everyone can access via their tablets. But the icing on the high-tech cake is an offering from ARC Document Solutions that makes it all work together like a Swiss watch: hyperlinking documents.

Touch and Go

Traditionally, each project blueprint can contain many references to other documents. To view them, the user has to dig them out of a pile of prints, or, if they’re digital, search through a computer directory to find them.

With hyperlinking, ARC creates a dynamic link to the document being referenced, and on a tablet or screen, the user simply has to touch or click the link to be taken to the new document.

That leads to faster referencing, fewer treks to the office from the jobsite, and much less printing.

“Everyone from the general contractor to the architect is very happy with it,” said Mitchell Turner, CRS Project Manager. “They love how easy it is to scroll through drawings and how you can view the whole plan or click on links to zero in on specific details.”

Deconstructing Chaos

Another thing that Turner likes about hyperlinking is that any changes to a document can be implemented instantaneously, which in turn gives everyone access to the latest version.

“It definitely cuts down on the chaos,” he added.

In addition to hyperlinking making everyone’s job more efficient, Turner is quick to point out that ARC is doing an equally reliable job behind the scenes.

“ARC is very prompt when it comes to scanning and uploading the PDFs we send them,” said the appreciative project manager. “And that allows us to concentrate on what we do best.”

CRS has another new elementary school building project coming up in Macon. Hyperlinking will definitely be a part of the process as it helps keep everyone on the construction site on the same page.

Make that the same screen.
