MPS and Shawmut Design and Construction

100% employee-owned Shawmut Design and Construction, a national construction management firm with offices in Boston, New York, Providence, Las Vegas, and New Haven, delivers exceptional, personalized service to their clients. A top 100 construction firm according to ENR magazine, Shawmut is routinely voted a “great place to work” in the press. The company promotes social responsibility and strives to positively participate in the communities where employees live and work.

Shawmut employee-owners intensely listen to their clients’ goals and concerns. The company works hard at being a trusted partner to their clients, consultants and vendors. Their yearly revenue during the economic downturn is proof that this business philosophy works.

So when the Shawmut management team took on the goal of optimizing their print infrastructure and adding cost-savings to their bottom line, they sought a partner who shared the same values.

Implementing an efficient Managed Print Services (MPS) program starts with finding the right partner. Shawmut went out to bid seeking a partner they could count on. They sought a professional company that could communicate well. A partner with knowledgeable employees. With a national footprint. One that treated their customers and employees the same way Shawmut treated theirs.

Shawmut chose ARC. With over 500 employees in 5 locations, Shawmut Design and Construction uses over 100 machines, both large- and small-format, to answer their print needs. Project sites, typically open for a brief time during the build phase of a project, add another layer of complexity.

Shawmut had been using Service Point as their print provider. But they sought greater support capabilities.

The bid process came down to six finalists. Shawmut’s team visited potential MPS vendors to see their operations. To get a feel for how they worked, and how they supported their customers. They met the management teams on their short list. They did their homework. After all the research, Shawmut chose ARC. ARC was chosen for their professionalism, ability to tailor hardware-independent solutions, sustainability services, national customer support capabilities and for internally-developed technology like AbacusPCR and PlanWell EWO. With over 270 locations around the U.S., ARC was viewed as the company that could uniquely support Shawmut with local, dedicated support teams.

After working out an aggressive integration plan, the joint teams came in over a single weekend and replaced every machine in each location with new, more efficient ones. Each one chosen for the workspace based on Shawmut employee needs, workflow efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

AbacusPCR, ARC’s own print cost recovery solution, along with PlanWell EWO, ARC’s electronic work order app, was added to the Shawmut network to make tracking prints, administering client print reimbursement and ordering consumables more efficient.

Ken McKeown, Director of Facilities, spoke about how impressed he was with the integration and that “ARC took full ownership of the project, like they were a part of Shawmut.”

On Monday morning, Shawmut employees came in to work and barely noticed that there had been a wholesale change to their print network. Other than the new machines, the only clue was a note on every employee’s desk explaining that ARC was now supporting them. In that note, the contact info of each member of the ARC Shawmut support team. No generic 800 numbers, but the local numbers of local ARC employees dedicated to the success of Shawmut.

“Their communication, their professionalism, the ARC management and support team is all top notch,” Ken McKeown reports. “We knew we made the right choice when ARC employees came in over that one weekend, worked at an amazing pace, and even helped move out the old vendor’s machines. That commitment to the personal touch by the local ARC teams is why we chose ARC.”
