MPS Customer Success: Removing a World of Printing Complexity

Headquartered in McLean, Virginia, SAIC Energy, Environment and Infrastructure is one of only a handful of full-service design and DesignBuild companies in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry.

Earlier this year, the company landed the Plainfield Renewable Energy project, a $225 million biomass facility in Plainfield, Connecticut. This project brought SAIC face-to-face with a multitude of printing challenges that included managing 40 vendors on four continents who were speaking five different languages. At the height of the project, they would have 350 full-time workers on site. Leveraging technology to streamline the process and make information available to all staff members was crucial for them to succeed.

“When I engaged ARC, I was looking to remove a world of printing and plotting complexity,” says Joseph Joseph, SAIC’s Managing Director, BIM and CAD Technologies, Facilities and DesignBuild. “I also wanted to lower costs and stress.”

ARC: Technology Integration Experts

“ARC’s Managed Print Services team was very specific about how to come up with a project plan to actually approach this paradigm shift,” recollects Joseph. “As technology integration experts, they really understood what we were going through in terms of how we consume our information and the way we design and deliver our facilities to our customers.”

One of the solutions involved installing large touch-screens on the jobsite that acted as digital kiosks, allowing sub-contractors to interact with building information models, otherwise known as BIM, and real-time design that was occurring in the office miles away from the project. These touch-screens gave SAIC’s construction staff a golden opportunity to visualize the space in three dimensions rather than imagine it while looking at two-dimensional drawings. The screens also gave the team the ability to make real-time decisions in a fast-tracked environment and facilitated the delivery of a better product.

“To be able to utilize ARC’s exposure to a multi-geographical location solution both in the U.S. and overseas was huge,” adds Joseph. “Bringing all of these inconsistencies between the offices and unifying them under one reliable service was absolutely critical to improving our process and work flow.”

SAIC needed a new definition of document management that incorporated the latest technology, encompassed global diversity, and delivered information in real time, and ARC delivered.

In turn, SAIC was able to get out of the printing business and focus on what they do best.

“I don’t really think about printing everyday anymore,” says Joseph.
