A Milestone Built One Experience at a Time
In 2020, ARC began asking customers a simple question: How did we do?
There were no incentives attached. No discounts or rewards for responding. The purpose was to hear directly from the people we worked with and understand their experiences in their own words.
At the time, reaching 3,000 reviews seemed remarkable. We wrote about it on this site and described the idea behind the effort simply: we wanted to know what customers would say about us when we weren’t in the room.
Six years later, that conversation has grown considerably.
ARC has now received more than 30,000 customer reviews. To recognize the people behind that milestone, we’re marking it in a different way—by planting 3,000 trees.
Not as a reward for ourselves, but as a thank-you to the customers who made the milestone possible.
What 30,000 Voices Can Tell You
A review is a small act. Someone finishes a project, receives an order, works through a problem with a team member, and then decides to spend a few additional minutes telling someone about the experience.
Multiply that act thousands of times and something interesting happens.
The reviews stop being individual comments and become a record of relationships between customers and the people serving them.
The scale itself is unusual. For context, a recent analysis of more than 57,000 U.S. businesses found a median of 117 Google reviews per business. While that comparison isn’t apples-to-apples with reviews collected across a national organization, it provides useful perspective on just how much customer participation is represented by this milestone.
But the number is less interesting than what sits behind it.
There are compliments and suggestions. There are stories about tight deadlines and difficult projects. There are people recognizing employees by name. And, inevitably, there is feedback that tells us where an experience could have been better.
All of it has value.
As our Chairman and CEO, Suri Suriyakumar, has expressed in reflecting on this milestone, customer relationships are built over time through thousands of individual interactions. A large review count doesn’t happen because a company announces that customer service matters. It happens when people have experiences they consider worth talking about.
That distinction matters.
Why Trees
When considering how to recognize the milestone, we wanted to do something with a life beyond the celebration itself.
Trees seemed particularly appropriate.
A tree planted today is inherently an investment in the future. Its value isn’t realized immediately. Given the right conditions, it grows gradually, providing habitat, storing carbon, intercepting rainfall, and contributing to the larger ecosystem around it.
The science behind that contribution is substantial. In one USDA-described Forest Service and Arbor Day Foundation initiative, 100,000 trees planted over a decade were projected to sequester 0.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, treat 133 million gallons of stormwater, and absorb nearly 131,000 pounds of air pollutants.
Of course, trees aren’t interchangeable units. Species, climate, location, age, health, and survival all affect their environmental contribution. U.S. Forest Service research shows that carbon storage and accumulation vary considerably by region and forest type.
That’s an important point because sustainability shouldn’t be reduced to a convenient equation.
Planting a tree doesn’t solve an environmental problem by itself. But planting trees, reducing waste, using resources more thoughtfully, and continually looking for better ways to operate are all practical actions that can accumulate over time.
Small Actions Become Large Numbers
There is an interesting parallel between a forest and a collection of customer reviews.
Neither begins as something large.
One person leaves a review. Another does the same. Eventually thousands of individual experiences become a meaningful record.
One tree is planted. Then another. Given time and care, individual trees become part of something much larger than themselves.
Perhaps that’s the most appropriate way to think about this milestone.
Businesses tend to celebrate round numbers because they’re easy to recognize. But the number itself isn’t the achievement. The individual actions that created it are.
The customer who took five minutes to recognize an employee.
The team member who stayed late to finish a project.
The person who shared constructive criticism because something could have gone better.
And now, the individual trees being planted as a result.
A Thank You That Keeps Growing
We don’t know what the next milestone will look like, and that’s probably not the important question.
What matters is continuing to listen.
Customer feedback is valuable precisely because it comes from outside the organization. It provides a perspective no internal meeting, performance report, or business plan can fully reproduce. Sometimes it confirms what is working. Sometimes it points toward what needs attention.
Either way, it deserves to be heard.
So this milestone is ultimately less about ARC than it is about the thousands of people who contributed to it.
To everyone who took the time to share an experience over the years, thank you.
The reviews gave us something worth celebrating.
We hope the trees give something back.
